Even the most enterprising home and business owners are not permitted to install their own air cons. The exception here is a portable unit, which doesn’t require much more than unboxing and plugging into a nearby outlet. Of course, these are also the least effective at cooling spaces of any notable size.
Only a certified and licensed air con professional can install the following types of air conditioners:
These regulations are in place to keep everyone and everything safe. Air conditioner installation requires electrical work and wiring at a minimum, which must be done to code. Some units also run off of natural gas, which requires work from a certified gas fitter. Larger ducted systems entail a lot of sheet metal work, not to mention routing, venting, and proper supports.
A professional installer can help you calculate this based on a set of common factors. It’s important to have the right size air con for the space to avoid the unit straining to achieve the desired temperatures. This can cause spikes in your energy bills and general discomfort when your rooms are not as cool as you’d like. Some of the factors that can impact the size you’ll need include:
To get the best performance and efficiency, it is important that you install an air con with the proper power for the size of your room. A very large room will not be cooled using a device that has too few kilowatts of power. On the other hand, an appliance with too many kilowatts will just waste power in the small room.
Generally, you will need 0.12 to 0.15 kW of power per m². To calculate this, multiply the length of the room by the width of the room. The result will be the square meters for that area. Here’s a sizing guide for you:
|Room Size||Typical Room Type||System Size|
|10-25 m2||Bedroom | Study | Small lounge |
Small kitchen | Small office
|25-35 m2||Mid-size Bedrooms | Bedrooms with ensuites |
Mid-size lounges | Mid-sized kitchens |
Small rooms with high ceilings | Offices
|45-60 m2||Large bedroom | Bedroom with ensuites |
Mid-size lounges | Large kitchens |
Mid-sized rooms with high ceilings | Offices
|5 – 6 kW|
|60-80 m2||Large lounges | Large open plan areas |
Small shops | Offices
|7 – 8 kW|
Where the actual air con unit (or units) are installed will be a factor of their type. Larger ducted systems will have their unit placed outside by a professional installer, usually with good access to electrical needed to power it. Ductwork is then routed to the rooms you specify as a home or business owner (though in most ducted systems, all rooms are included to allow for proper temperature control.
The installer will also consider places that are under shade and well ventilated to prevent heat transfer into the building as well as the unit running less efficiently. For split systems, the outdoor unit is usually installed close to the indoor unit to maximise efficiency. Most leading brands allow installation up to 20m apart without the need for additional refrigerant. However, we recommend keeping this distance within 5m if possible.
The rate of air con installers will depend, among other things, on the particularities of your home or business, the type of air conditioner you are getting installed and the number of units you want to install. For example, an old terrace home in Newtown may offer a more complex install than a standalone property in Glebe.
In Sydney, professional air con installers charge an average of $90 to $120 per hour for residential and commercial AC installation, respectively. Most of the time, the entire installation can be done within one day.
HunterCON customers rest assured that their air con is installed by the top professionals in Sydney. All of our installers are fully licensed electric and air con specialists. We also back all of our air conditioning installation services with a solid five-year warranty so you can keep your cool even if the temperatures rise.
After installing the air conditioner, we normally recommend you get a maintenance service from us once every 6 to 12 months. This depends on how much you use the air con and the quality of air in your neighbourhood. This ensures that the unit will continue to work in an optimum manner with clean filters and without any blockages. If you don’t maintain your air conditioner in regular intervals, you will experience a drop in performance and efficiency.
Any of the following factors in combination with one another can contribute to the cost of an air conditioner installation, so be sure to request a quote for your exact needs:
In the bedrooms, each split should be located in a place where the air does not flow directly over beds. Throughout the rest of a home, it is recommended that each unit be placed in the centre of each room to provide equitable airflow.
It is a way of installing wall-mounted split systems in which the distance between the indoor and outdoor units is the smallest possible. This is achieved by installing them on the same wall, back to back, with one outside and one inside and only separated by the wall itself. Since the appliances are close together, fewer pipes, drains and cables are used than in any other type of installation, making this one the most economical there is.
Another way to save costs when installing an AC is the so-called side-to-back installation. Here, the indoor unit is installed in an upper corner of the room. The outside compressor is placed at ground level and perpendicular to the indoor unit. Both installation types allow the water produced by the internal unit to flow toward the external unit so that the latter expels it.
This will vary depending on the type of system you are having installed. Split systems can be fairly straightforward to get in place. If the installation takes place in an area where no other air conditioner has been placed, setting up the new unit may take 4-8 hours. Removing existing units and older wiring can add time to the project, in some cases extending the entire installation to a full day.
In contrast, a ducted system will take a bit more time. Installing the ductwork itself can take one to two days. It will be even longer if the existing ductwork has to be repaired or completely removed and replaced. The air con unit itself will also need several hours for installation including placement, proper wiring, and testing.
