Electrical Installation Sydney: Do you need to have electrical appliances installed in Sydney? We’ve got you covered.
Below we will give you information related to which are the most electrical works done in Sydney and the average cost for each.
On average an electrician charges between $90 – $130 in Sydney.
Typically, electricians charge by the hour, but they also have a call-out fee which is the minimum rate they charge to go anywhere to do a job, even if it only takes a few minutes to finish the job. In Sydney, the call-out fee has an average cost of $100.
Some of the most common services offered by electricians are the installation of lights, ceiling fans, switches, standard powerpoints as well as those that have USB ports, in addition to repairing circuits or wiring.
In any case, the cost of each service varies depending on its complexity. Here are some average prices electricians charge for various electrical work in Sydney:
• Damaged-cable fixing: $105- $135
• Downlight installation: $35- $45
• Fault finding: $90- $110
• Light-switch replacing: $95- $105
• Powerpoint fixing: $50 – $70
• Meter-box repairs: $200- $300
Usually an electrician in Sydney charges between $90 – $130 per hour. However, the total number of hours that are used for a particular job will depend on its complexity, materials and equipment necessary for its completion, as explained below.
Naturally, the more complex the job, the more man-hours it will require, thus increasing your costs. The electrician you hire can estimate the number of hours your job will require.
The price of materials, such as cables, switches and others, will depend on the brand and the supplier of the same. Well-known brands usually have the best products, but they are also usually the most expensive. Please contact us if you need a fast free quotation.
This will depend on the size and number of rooms that the property has. To give you an idea, renovating the wiring of a five-bedroom home costs about $8,000.
The fees of an electrician in Sydney for the installation of a ceiling fan will depend on the type of fan, specifically the number of cables that the fan has, but, on average, these professionals charge between $100 – $150 per fan.
It is, financially speaking. Indeed, these devices consume little energy (the equivalent of a 60-watt bulb) and will cool the area where you install them but not as much as an air conditioner, of course.
Because these professionals are trained to analyze complete electrical power systems, identify power outage causes, and make complex repairs. In addition, professional electricians have knowledge that goes beyond lighting installation.
On the other hand, electricians must be up-to-date with local and regional codes on the matter. These codes are constantly updated through new regulations to meet emerging technological needs and are intended to ensure that each electrical work is carried out correctly, for the convenience of all parties involved.
Likewise, electricians have tools, meters, and auxiliary supplies that the ordinary citizen does not usually have or know how to use. The factors mentioned above play an important role when it comes to lighting fixtures. Because all types of electrical projects that include the installation of lights involve many risks.
It depends on taste, but among the most recommended are halogen, fluorescent and incandescent lights.
Fluorescent lights come in different shades, have low power consumption and long life.
On the other hand, incandescent lights provide soft yellow light that is often used for downlights or recessed cans.
Finally, halogen lights are great for task lighting because they produce a firm white light.

Electrical Installation Sydney: What are some bathroom electrical safety tips?
• Dry your hands and stand on a dry surface before turning on a light switch or electrical appliance.
• Keep all electrical appliances away from children.
• Never use a portable electric heater in the bathroom. A professional electrician can install a permanent heater.
• Don’t use power boards or extension cords in the bathroom either, as these appliances are rarely waterproof.
Australian Standards for the use of electrical appliances in the bathroom establish a division of each bathroom into four zones.
It’s the wet area and includes the shower, the interior bathtub; sockets and switches are not allowed in it. Zone 0 ends where Zone 1 starts.
It’s a vertical distance of 2.5 meters from the foundation of the shower to the ceiling and within 1.2 meters from your fixed shower connection. Includes the tub rim to a height of up to 2.5 meters. Sockets are not allowed in zone 1, and there can only be switches 0.3 meters above the bathroom floor with IPX4 specification.
It is 0.6 meters beyond the zone 1 radius and at a height of 2.25 meters from the ground. No sockets are allowed in this Zone unless they are protected by Residual Current Detectors (RCD) with a fixed rating of less than 30mA, and in a cupboard, or incorporated into a shaver supply unit. On the other hand, switches can be installed in zone 2 if they meet the same requirement of Zone 1: they must be 0.3 meters above the bathroom floor and have IPX4 specification.
It comprises the rest of the bathroom space, which would be at a horizontal radius of 2.4 meters from Zone 2 and, vertically, at 2.5 meters from the ground. This is the only area where sockets are permitted provided that they’re fitted with RCD protection and installed at more than 0.3m above the bathroom floor. This same requirement is enforced for switch installation, but, unlike the other zones, no specific IP rating is required.
